To think to do otherwise admits an ignorance of the behavior of many religions. Especially that of their leaders in the past. It shows a naive expectation that organized religion and today’s leaders are in any way different. Do you believe they would not do the same things again? To you? To your family? 
 
To think this is to ignore all that history can teach you. You are longing for a safety position where someone else is looking after your interests. Someone else will be protecting your provision of food, shelter and comforts. Please consider what is demanded in return. Total control of your life. You have to be domesticated like goats and sheep. Possibly you have to be lobotomized. You have to be prepared to be shorn regularly. 
 
The answer to these all too common perversions of religion is to go underground. You are not required to publicize your conversion to a new religious paradigm. You are not required to give up any belief system you now have. Whether you believe in God, or not. You do not have to set yourself up as a target. You are not a billboard for any religion. You need not stand out in any society. You need not come to the attention of any government. 
 
Being a martyr is not a necessary part of the requirements of God. In fact, I urge you to play a cautious game. I urge you to use social camouflage. I urge you to stay hidden. I urge you to practice your religion as you see fit behind closed doors. 
 
When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Be a Roman candle. Wear a toga. Speak Latin. Go to the temple. Offer sacrifice. Bow properly. Keep your mouth shut. Keep your eyes open. Keep your ears working. Survive. Do what you must to survive. Raw survival is the only imperative. 
 
Even in the United States there is a growing danger from fundamentalist revolutionary evangelical zealots. These zealots are grasping for political power. Under these zealots, our government can and will change its stance as regards religion. There is a growing danger that those who seize political power will be willing to force you to "belong" to a certain religion. 
 
They will force you to believe, or behave, according to what they believe. They do not believe in privacy. They will invade your home. They will invade your bedroom. They will control how and with whom you have sex. They will control births. They will control your reproduction. They will control your body. They will control your mind. The stocks, branding iron, noose, and dunking stool are not that far away from your future. 
 
Do not doubt this. It has happened before. It will happen again. 
 
Read again the cautionary part of the paragraphs above, and learn. Survive. 
 
However, to find God, to find soul, remain the single most important accomplishments of any human being’s life. That, you can do at home, behind closed doors. Remember, Jesus, too, met with His followers behind closed doors.
