What Does God Look Like?

By: George Wallace

What does God look like? I don’t know.

I also don’t know if She, or He, wears boxers, briefs, or pantyhose, or needs any one of these choices. And are these questions really important?

Well, I’ll grant that, to many people, an appearance by way of a picture, or a sculpture, allows them to visualize God more easily.

As far as I am concerned, you may use any image you choose that pleases you.

However, I do think that a non-human image is best. Otherwise it is too easy to fall into the unintended misconception that God is human and has human concerns.

Several references made in Exodus indicate that God appeared to the Israelites as a cloud and as a brilliant light. A picture of a cloud would do well as a symbol of God. A bowling ball could be a good choice.

Go back in history: use a circle, a spiral, a star, a cross, or whatever you choose: a frog, a dragonfly, or an elephant?

I see a lot of candles and candle images in churches. These might do as well as a symbol for God. Are candles already a substitute symbol for God? I have read one estimate that suggests that the light of an oil lamp (essentially a candle) has been used as a symbol for God for forty thousand years.

Or, why not use an image of a spider? I discovered that idea in New Mexico.

God at least created the spider. The criteria fit the need. A simple child’s drawing will do. This image need not call for the skills of Michelangelo.

It is not as if we were inventing something new.

God doesn’t care what we call Him, nor what image of Him we use.

We can use any name, or image we choose.
