Waiting for The October Shoe Surprise

By: George Wallace

I’m waiting for the shoe to drop. Again. I thought it already had. Then that shoe turned out to be a hoax. Remember the story about terrorists planning to explode radiological bombs in seven NFL stadiums this weekend? That’s the problem with this kind of thing, when there is this much excitement in causing havoc, there are copy cats, idiots, fanatics, and college numbheads who want in on the fun.

The “fun” in this instance is deliberately disrupting the midterm elections wherein we will choose our Representatives and a large number of Senators for the United States Congress. The misguided clown who jumped into the political fray and created this grandiose internet lie was an amateur without the expertise and requisite skills to get away with this dirty trick undetected and unscathed.

Definitely not like the old political pro like Karl Rove. Particularly and especially without the backing of the entire government of the country to make sure he could, get away with the subterfuge. That is how sophisticated I expect Karl’s October left jab to be. Just enough truth to add verisimilitude, and copious quantities of exaggerations and gallons of downright lies and distortions “to make the medicine go down”. Or maybe it is to make the giant economy sized suppository go up?

A false report from an authentic arm of government intelligence suggesting a real imminent attack, say on a US seaport, has been the one I’ve actually been expecting to be bruited about, and ballooned into a big “national news” story. That might be sufficient to create a short term climate of fear that would last long enough to get through the period of time when voters are trampling through the polling places.

My other favorite idea about Karl’s October Surprise is even less risky because it will actually take place in November. Simply steal the election by electronic fraud. You don’t think that the stupid decision to purchase hundreds of millions of dollars of voting machines without an available paper trail was an accident do you? When you believe as I do that this has been done in both of the last two “elections”, this planned well in advance option seems much more likely and very, very possible.

Karl’s goal will be to ratchet up the index of fear, because he knows that that this dirty trick works. If the level of fear increases enough, this third time around, fear will have a measurable effect on the Republican Party’s ability to retain power. The unanswered question is, when will the unwashed electorate at which the fear mongering is aimed, remember their nursery rhymes and stories about the little boy who cried wolf. Just how long can Karl get away with calling, “Wolfie ! Wolfie ! Wolf ! Osama ! -er-oops ! Wolf !”

Should you think this too cynical, I simply disagree. I believe that despite all the evidence to the contrary, the Bush Administration is totally convinced that they are the only ones with God’s favor. That they are totally convinced that they are destined to be the saviors of democracy, and that this is somehow God’s will. Further that anything without limit is permissible in the furtherance of this goal. After all, God wants it to happen. The Constitution is simply an old piece of paper and not much of a reason to keep them from doing anything they want to do.

I am unwilling to put anything past them. I an unwilling to put anything beneath their acceptance of any behavior, or misbehavior. Such behavior, or misbehavior, would be accepted as being divinely inspired and therefore entirely appropriate. The only criteria for evaluation is their ultimate retention of the power to which they seem to be addicted.

Yes, I’m even willing to believe that if they knew an attack was coming, they’d refrain from stopping it, allow the terrorists to succeed, deal out death and destruction, and use the results to feed their propaganda machine to promote the necessity for their retention of power to fight off such attacks. Is that cynical. Yes, but I believe it is also realistic. Lies and “manipulating the facts”, lies and “leaving out the facts”, lies and constantly blaming their failures on others can only go on so long before I simply believe that the Bush Administration and the Republican Party would do anything to retain political power for the Everlasting George Bush Imperial Presidency.

I question, and I think that you should question, at what level does the number of deaths and injuries to American service personnel cease to justify the continuing presence of those personnel in Iraq just to keep King George from having some of his ego deflated? October, 2006 is already the second most deadly month for American service personnel in this war. I don’t know why they should die. This war has lost all credence. This war has become impossible to “win”. It is time to leave and let the Iraqis kill off each other until they are finally tired of bloodshed.

If we feel some continued obligation at that future time, we can return and help the surviving population, if help is asked.

Dividing Iraq into three states seems sensible to me. Balkanization does work. The Balkans are peaceful now that they have killed enough of each other. States do separate on religious grounds. India became three different countries after World war Two, based on religious populations. What was done then can be done now.

What we are doing now is not working and cannot working with populations so divided.

Am I paranoid? Not usually. I believe that the Republican Party has gone power mad and has sold its soul to the twin Devils of corrupted power and unlimited spending. They cannot see that they are killing the very thing that they profess to love. Recent revelations bares the real cynicism of the Bush Administration when it comes to vote buying among the evangelicals. Current available analysis suggests that the evangelicals turned into power and cold cash whores to little avail, as the Republicans left by the back window without paying for their favors.

What then is left? The Race card. The Religion card again. The Patriotic card. The Pay-off card. The Fear Card. The Republicans are trying to stack the deck in the poker game of Power Politics. Their leaders have tried to claim the pot of the Hispanic vote by leaving the border open to unlimited immigration. The born again and patriotic votes are still strong, even if internal disbelief due to misbehavior of “rock solid Republican Representatives and leaders” is growing. Earmarked federal spending in the Congressional Districts was the Pay-off. Now, in the last days of the election, the ante is so large that the Fear Card has to be played.

The voters are carrying four aces, but can still be bluffed into throwing them in, if they are afraid to stay at the table.
