The general incompetence of the current political party in charge has placed our Democracy at risk. I tend to think that perhaps they can’t help it. The Republicans have been out of power for so long at the Congressional level, and much longer since they have had both Congress and the White House that they lack practice. They are simply unskilled. That is why I think that they have had so huge a problem with corruption. Without practice they are unskilled at properly hiding their actions. They are like the dehydrated man who stumbles in out of the desert and kills himself with too much of a good thing. That, and unbridled arrogance. I prefer to believe this as opposed to a less charitable thought that it is deliberate and with intent to defraud and steal future elections. The problem? Electronic voting machines. It is a scandal which is accompanied by a significant loss of trust and confidence in the election process. The Republicans have had five years to clean up this mess and have obviously chosen not to do so. I think that they must see an advantage to their side not to have cleaned up the mess. This I truly do not understand. Everyone knows the nearly absolute power of the incumbent to be re-elected. The Republicans are in power. It stands to reason therefore that it would be in their best interests to have the cleanest, most honest elections with an absolutely minimal possibility of election fraud. This an exact parallel to the immigration mess. Yes, the mess is so obvious and ought to be cleaned up, but there are so many advantages, or perceived advantages for the Republicans that they cannot bring themselves to get their hands dirty with a little honest dirt and sweat. The Republicans have had the power of both houses of Congress, the White House, a generally receptive Judiciary Branch and the Almighty Power of the Purse for five years. They have been so incompetent in these and a hundred other areas that our country is at risk of becoming something that not even republicanisms can survive. They have had this uncontested power for five long slow years. This is more than enough time to cook the books. It looks like their ace-in-the-hole plan is rigging future elections through the back door so that they can remain in power. This worked before in Florida, and I guess you go with what you know. It is probably cheaper and easier to payoff some electronic election machine technician to spin the numbers in the results than to raise money for an election campaign. We can become a more intolerant, more militaristic, more totalitarian society. We could even turn into a theocratic evangelical political state. We can continually reduce individual freedoms, reduce opportunities, and generally guarantee that people of wealth get to lord it over poor folks and have their feet and other anatomical parts kissed regularly. Of course, all that will destroy the system that created the possibility for so many to be successful and become conservative and then become good Republicans. It will be very much like the Shakers. Idealists that could not see that their beliefs left no room for a future. They didn’t breed themselves out of existence. The excesses of the Republicans will also eventually do them in. I find it a terrible irony that the medical research that might have been of great value to one of the great Republican leaders, Ronald Reagan, has been allowed to stagnate by one of the worst Republicans elected to the highest office. A recent national news magazine had it right on their cover, “W” is a cowboy, but he is all hat and no cattle. The problem with this kind of unbridled arrogance is that when it is put in play at the level of nations the unintended consequences are enormous and painful. The best thing that can be said is that by my count there are only 918 days left to endure until this “leader” retires.

His pithy comments and suggestions for a return to a God-centered personal religion will interest everyone.
