Specific Goal Setting

By:

One of the biggest mistakes you can make in your business is in the way you set your goals. To say "our goal is to increase sales" is too vague and ambiguous. You need to get down to specifics so that you have something tangible to act on. Only in this way can you accomplish your goals successfully and know when they have been achieved.

When setting an effective goal, you cannot afford to be vague. You must research and come up with a set of specifics that state your goal in measurable terms. A goal like "I want to increase sales" is incomplete and ambiguous and cannot be considered an effective goal.

It involves establishing a quantifiable result, and defining it. So you know when you've achieved your targets. So you could set a specific goal of increasing your customer by 25% in the nest six months, for example. Or increase profits by 30% in the next twelve months. These goals are specific and provide a way to quantify and measure your results.

But your goals should be realistic and reasonable, goals that you can confidently attain. Perhaps your profits as a new company may not take so large a leap as 30% in that year ˇV but you might with strategic planning and marketing reach that measure of growth in the next two years.

Just as you need to make sure that your goal is reasonable, it should also be challenging. Constantly setting easy goals will not help you learn to work hard to overcome challenges. Make sure that your goal requires you to stretch a little bit. Then your next goal setting session can involve goals that are even more ambitious.

Your plan of action is an important part of the whole process. It is best to break up your main goal into several, smaller goals. This makes the task ahead look less daunting and staff morale will remain high throughout the project. You should devise a specific plan for each goal such that put together, your ultimate goal is achieved.

A great tool that tips the balance in your favor, specific goal setting paves the path for your success. It is a crucial asset to businesses, most fall by the wayside in the first five years. But a good five year plan collated from a variety of specific goals always helps to keep businesses afloat. So it doesn't go out of business, but instead, arms it your business with a mission to succeed.

Any business goal which is specific in nature can be achieved and this translates into success for your business. The key to accomplishing an effective specific business goal is to write it down. You should also write down your plan of action. Having these on paper, means you can refer to them from time to time. They also serve as a road map as you progress along. If you don't write down your goals, you'll probably forget about them. So if you want success for your business, start by setting a specific goal, write it down and then take it from there.
