Sex Instruction

By: George Wallace

First, your child needs the facts, the names, the plumbing, and the mechanism. Do not forget the plumber's helper!

Second, your child desperately needs the much more difficult information. Knowledge about feelings and values that belong to your family. Knowledge about why you have them.

Third, your child needs you to talk clearly to them in words that they understand.

You have to be simple, graphic, specific, and even crude. You must be absolutely sure that your child knows about all three kinds of sex. There are kids today doing oral and anal sex to avoid pregnancy.

I have no problem with teaching, or even preaching, abstinence. I have trouble with your believing that your teaching and preaching about abstinence will work to keep your children celibate until marriage. I am afraid that you are living in a fool's paradise of unreality. Our problem as a society is that we don't practice what we preach, and the kids know it. They constantly see evidence of Big Lies around them, in the quality of their schools, their libraries, and their school books.

Talking like we believe abstinence will work is like believing that an ice cube placed upon a hot stove will not melt. 'Tain't so! That is not real. That is not seeing the world as it is. You are leading your child to death.

If you try to control and protect your child too much, the result is not one you really want. Children must risk some level of bumps and bangs, or they do not grow tough enough to survive. What we are talking about here is basic knowledge and attitudes. These, you must teach your children.

You are a part of the problem if you do not know the statistics, the actual numerical percentages for teen pregnancy, VD, and HIV infections in your community. You are being a delinquent parent. You are at fault. You cannot do you job as a parent and tell your children the truth that they need to hear from your lips. You are being criminally stupid.

This real knowledge will scare you. That is good. If you are properly scared, you will get past the embarrassment. You will teach your child real world skills for living that he or she needs to survive. Today, up to twenty-six percent of us are effected or affected by HIV alone. That is one out of every four people you see in your daily life. People you see and interact with every day. You cannot escape. You must deal with it. The alternatives are too grim, you must deal with it.

You must say specifically and graphically words like these, "If you are going to allow a man to convince you to wrap your mouth around his penis, you will learn about condoms and practice how to use them, here, now, with me, here, and with this banana". Better the fruit and a lot of red faced laughing than unprotected sex in the back seat of a car, or at a friend's house. You must also talk just as graphically and specifically about other kinds of sex.

I am convinced that the more you talk to your kids, and refuse to tell them lies, the more likely it is that you will be the role model that they will follow even when you are not there. What is more, I believe that your children are not stupid.

I believe that your children will admire you. Admire you for the strength and commitment you have shown. Admire you for having demonstrated to them that you love them. You care about them, and respect them enough to embarrass yourself for their behalf.

When do we recognize that there are enough of us on the planet? When do we recognize that the planet can't take it much longer? When will the four horsemen ride again?
