Sex Instruction: HIV and AIDS

We need a clear survival plan for today’s very real world. Teach your children what they need to know. Help them to know how to make better decisions. Help them live. Which immediately brings us to the problem of HIV in the modern world.

The requirement of the unwritten rule of survival is to be honest with yourself first. See clearly, or die. To see clearly is the problem. To see the world as it is, not as we want it to be, is hardest when it comes to our children, and demands the utmost from us. We love our children and grandchildren more than life itself. We allow our emotions to get in the way of our heads all the time. In today's world that can get our children and grandchildren killed.

This is never more clearly as major an issue as when parents must deal with the current divergent currents of our culture and human biology. No one wants our kids to grow up so soon. Parents are always fighting a losing battle, with skirmishes here, and fire fights there. Parents, plan ahead: plan to lose all the battles, skirmishes and fights, but plan to win the war. Teach your child how to survive.

You already know that you are going to lose the fight to preserve your child's childhood.

Your child is going to be an adult someday.

This doting grandparent absolutely agrees that there is no reason to rush that event by even one day.

However; that said, parents today cannot safely bury their heads in sand and hope realistically that the problems of sex, VD, AIDS, and HIV are going to go quietly away. That attitude will get your child killed.

You are absolutely the only ones that have the unenviable task of teaching your child to survive. Do not, repeat, do not, depend on the schools, or anyone else, to do your job for you.

The world your child faces is infinitely more dangerous than than that faced by any other generation.

Only those who experience actual war have a more dangerous situation. The facts are that children are becoming sexually active at an early age. Face it. I don't like these facts myself. I even find it uncomfortable to write about.

You have to deal with it.

Children today are sexually active as early as age twelve. The dangers of pregnancy, fatherhood, and especially disease are ever present.

Start early. Make the lessons short. Repeat them frequently. Tell your kids how you feel. Tell your kids what you think. Tell your kids what you expect of them. Practice. Role play. Make it real so they will recognize reality when it arrives.

Eve wasn't evil, or even stupid. Eve was ignorant, ill informed, did not recognize reality when looking at it, made a impromptu decision based on insufficent information and suddenly needed a new wardrobe.

As bad as the older venereal diseases were, they are not even in the same category as HIV. HIV changes all the old "rules" and ideas about sex instruction.

There is no cure for HIV today. If HIV is contracted young, the individual dies young. The individual dies an extremely ugly death.

That is seeing the world as it is, not as we wish it to be.
