The age of the child at the time a decision to "do something about it" is made Is important, as different factors enter into the equation. Refusal to Work, Part 3 "Talk Story #5" One year a student named "Jason", went into a "no-work" mode at school and at home. His grades plummeted and all home chores were also going undone. Punishments didn't work. Bribery didn't work. As the parents and I collaborated, eventually they came to the decision to use "deprivation" as they'd come to the realization that "his room" had become "his castle" and was the real center of "his universe", with many kinds of entertainment. The parents decided to use a gradual systematic withdrawal of his "Toys & Things". Eventually nothing was left in his room except his bed, dresser, and clothes. Finally, even the walls had to be repainted and the window had to be painted over, to remove the entertainment value of that distraction as well. At school, following the agreed upon plan, I had stopped trying to get him to do his work, leaving it up to him to decide to rejoin the real world. After five weeks of total boredom: going home and going to his room to look at a gray wall, being asked to do no chores, Jason came out of his room and carried out the trash, unasked. Total time to change: about three months. When asked about it later, Jason's only remark was, "I wanted to see if you really meant what you said." Give the kid credit, he was testing his parents.
