Prayer, Chutzpah, & Outright Stupidity

By: George Wallace

Use the concept of prayer known as thanksgiving. This is an attempt for direct communication with God. Say in prayer, “God, I have studied. I have made my best effort to understand. I have accomplished the required tasks. I will attempt my best in this contest. Amen”

This kind of prayer is a kind of mental and physical relaxation exercise. It deals with tension, and may permit you to give your best performance.

On the other hand, it is your fault if you didn’t crack a book. If you didn't read the material on quadratic equations. It is your fault that you attempted no practice. If you asked no questions. It is your fault that instead you got drunk. It is your fault that you were otherwise irresponsible in your behavior. These were your choices. These were your decisions. These were examples of your free will.

Now you have a headache. Now you have a hangover. You also have tons of chutzpah, if you to beg in prayer for a free gift of knowledge from Deity. To beg for a gift without having worked for it, is as close as it gets to outright stupidity. This is as close as it gets to ‘religious sin’. Not to mention, you are asking for it! If God ever indulges in direct interaction with anyone, you are in trouble. All that is deserved is a hot shot of lightning right up the ass. Perhaps it is a very good thing that God doesn’t listen. And that He doesn’t get angry.

Please note that "thanks" were not offered in the prayer to God for God’s efforts. God didn’t make any. You are the one doing the work. The “prayer” was more of a personal recitation of a list of methods of preparation. The prayer was a self promise of intent to do one’s best.

Here's another reasonable possibility. "Thank you, God, for what you have done for me. I renounce my sins and will earnestly endeavor to sin no more. I ask for your presence in my life. I thank you for my relationship with you. Amen."

Do not pretend to yourself that God is listening. He is not listening. God never gives us any promises. God gives no guarantees. God is not going to make you faster and tougher than that mean, ugly, vile linebacker with green teeth on the other side of the line. Practice might. It is doubtful that God listens to, or answers prayers. That linebacker just might stomp the shit out of you.

Be prepared.

Begging God doesn’t work either. Using controlled anger might help.
