We all know writers that want to create their “masterpiece”. Their own “master-work”. They want to write the all time world’s greatest novel. You may be guilty as charged. It is time to cut the crap and get real. You need to know your audience. Today’s reader won’t read that great novel. They can’t. They are basically illiterate. Their average reading level is about at 5th grade. They are poorer readers. They have poorer skills. They are generally more poorly educated. They have poorer, more limited vocabularies. They are immature. They were created by an overwhelmed, inadequate educational system. A system that was starved of funds by self-serving politicians. An undemanding system was designed, avoiding causing the taxpayer stress. The students were instead stressed by their own undisciplined laziness. Pandemic indiscipline was the unpunished paradigm. They were created by TV. They were created by the 15 second sound bite. They were created by short term thinking programs. Programs that solved major personal problems in thirty minutes. Programs that fought intercontinental wars in 90 minutes. They are accustomed to fast action and immediate gratification. They respond best to raw emotions. They expect a magic pill. They can’t sit still long enough to read long sentences. So keep your sentences between 7 to 10 words long. Paragraphs should be 4 to 7 sentences. It is as if they can only sip at ideas. They would flounder, strangle, and drown on a mouthful. Keep your writing pithy, brusque, and risqué. This will get and keep their attention. Have plenty of sex talk and action. They like everything about sex. Ernest Hemingway was a man ahead of his time. “The Old Man And The Sea” spoke to his vision. He knew the reduced capacity of the modern reader. Get, read, and keep a copy handy. You can then easily remind yourself how to write. You must follow all the rules. (#1) To edit, read your work aloud to another person. (#2) Count the words in each sentence. (#3) Place the Paragraph marker symbols at the beginning of paragraphs. (#4) Continue editing until the rules are unbroken. (#5) Think of a bulleted list as opposed to paragraphs. Practice Drill: Go back over this article. Count sentences per paragraph. Count words per sentence. Did I follow the rules? If I can, you can. It is not easy. This style of writing is a prescription for success today. Keep practicing. Writing 1,000 word articles for web article directories is good practice. It teaches writing discipline.
