That’s right. Iraq is a basic training camp for al Queda, and their ilk. It includes many opportunities for live fire exercises. This quickly weeds out the dumb and unlucky among the constant flow of new terrorist trainees. The trainees come from the entire Muslim world to build a cadre of bomb building volunteers. There is no question that US troops are among the very best trained and equipped military in the world. There is no question that the kill ratio is heavily weighted to our advantage. The real question is: Given the fanaticism of the volunteers that continue to constantly arrive. Given their willingness, even eagerness to die. And given the slow pace of movement to make changes in the Moslem world that would ameliorate the issues that drive the high level of volunteerism. Is being the very best trained and equipped military in the world enough? Is it possible for a rag-tag, non-uniformed undisciplined volunteer militia, if adequately armed, and driven by religious fanaticism, enough to win a large scale military action and take over a whole country? Part of the answer is, yes. They are already doing it. The US is at a major disadvantage. We, our troops, are at the end of a very long supply route. The terrorist insurrectionists are local talent. Hello, does anyone remember a similar problem in Vietnam? It is the same problem George III had with those troublesome North American colonists. Part of the answer is in the number of US troops that have been killed in this war: 2709 as of 9.27.06. The rising tide of continued attacks by insurgents is also part of the answer. The insurgents are getting more numerous and stronger. They are getting bolder. The attacks are becoming more frequent and more violent. We, on the other hand, seem to be locked into doing the same old same old. No new ideas. No new tactics. That is also one of the symptoms of insanity. Endlessly repeating the same activity in the face of unchanging results. In my first article about the NIE, I suggested that the insurgency should be compared to an infection. Our patient is very ill. It is nearly terminal. It us time for new ideas, new approaches, new treatments. Possibly it is time for some new radical experimental treatments. IV the antibiotics? Radiation treatments? The disease has metastasized. It is time for surgery. Why not bulldoze a wide clear strip through Bagdad, call it a DMZ, and separate the two factions? Why not divide Iraq up into three different countries. Don’t tell me we can’t do it. We broke it, we own it, we are responsible for fixing it. We separate Siamese twins that can‘t live together. We can separate Iraq into functional entities as well. The alternative, which to me at least is as good a solution as any other, is to simply at an unannounced and appointed hour, leave. Take what you can, but leave. Get out of Dodge. Hit the trail, Jack. Find a way to leave your lover. Do it. Do it now. At least 50 % of Iraqis will love us for it. The NIE indicates that the war in Iraq is creating a new generation of terrorist leaders and operatives. Those cadres are already learning the lessons of constant modification and changing of tactics. The most chilling sentence was: “We assess that the underlying factors fueling the spread of the movement outweigh its vulnerabilities and are likely to do so for the [five -year] time frame of this Estimate.” No end in sight. No light at the end of a tunnel. There will be no change in five more years of this war that this estimate can predict. That gets us well past George W. Bush. And lands the problem squarely in the lap of some other politician. In the meantime all of the problems that plague us here at home will only continue to exacerbate. Maybe if we spend enough in Iraq, we can create a new economic depression in the American future.
