Lystrata is a noted novel by Aristophanes which was set to present the kind of culture that the people back then lives with. Undeniably then, because of this fact, the procedure by which the society separated themselves between each other, However, to give a rather colorful attraction on the part of the reasoning that must get out to the public as to why division happens in the society that they are living in, the author decided to set the story during the Peloponnesian war years when women were considered as individuals that are set with certain limitations which they are in need of recognizing. Undeniably then, it could be noticed that during that specific time in history, women were less likely expected to make definite changes in the society, not even the slightest movement to be involved in the changes that are to be applied as part of social progress. Lystrata however was a woman of different disposition. She knows that she is an individual who can do much and a person who can do more for the betterment of the situation of her people. One thing to consider, she hates war. However, because of this hatred of war, she started a war of her own, the war of the sexes or the deep setting of the differences between the feminine and masculine gender. How? In the story, Lystrata convinced the women in her community to not to submit to the sexual whims of their husbands every time they ask for such kind of attention. She asked them not to allow anything sexual to happen between them and their mates until they agree to make peace with the other side of the war so as to end the destruction of peace in that community they were living in. It was indeed a huge challenge for these women since they were rather advised to be submissive to everything that their men require of them. Consequently, the men who were deprived of their supposed need from their women were less enthusiastic in actually making the peace talks with the other side of the warfare, instead they decided to give in to what their mates ask for and that is the lack of sexual contact. This then lead to a competition as to who among these individuals would be best able to contain the said approach to each other’s demands hence resulting to a deeper sense of gender clash during that time. During the process of applying the said process of avoiding the responsibilities of each mate to each other, the different words and scripted lines used in the play naturally denote the kind of thinking that men and women have with regards their view about each other. At some point, both genders have different thoughts about the other, may it be negative or the other way around. Whatever it is, the essence of the play to show how gender issues are rather supported through the situations happening around the society during a certain time period.
