Life After Death? Part 1 Heaven and Purgatory

By: George Wallace

What happens to us when we die? Maybe we just die and that is the end. I choose to believe that God’s Plan has a purpose for us. We might not like it, but His Plan exists. God will call all of us home to Him and He will judge each of us.

Is there nothing else for us after death? Maybe not. If you are an atheist, either you are correct, or you’re in for a surprise.

I choose to believe that God’s Plan calls for us to return to being a part of God.

If you wish to call that Heaven, O.K. If you want to go to Heaven, O.K.

I want something better than Heaven. Heaven is only a place. I could live there.

I have always lived where I have hung my hat. I just think being a part of God is so much more than being in a place, it is Bliss and Nirvana, the Light, and the Way. What could be better than being a part of God? What could be better than being a part of the Awareness that is God?

An after life will happen, or it won't. By the time any of us find out the truth of it, it is too late to worry about it. You are empowered to make your own choices while you are alive.

I believe that after your death, God will retrieve the soul He loaned you for your lifetime. He will savor it. Smell it. Taste it. Chew it. Analyze it. Value it. This will happen to everyone without respect to how you chose to live your life. That is as close to Heaven as I can imagine.

I am sure that a number of people unfortunately build in their minds a picture of Heaven as a giant Entertainment Park, with admission by “good deeds”, and run by angels. An amusement park where it never gets dark or cold. Kind of like Alaska in the summer and without the mosquitoes. An amusement park with no tickets required for the rides. An amusement park with free unlimited colas and hot dogs at the concession stands.

One of the problems with the concept of heaven, is, I believe, that all too many people have a need to feel self-righteous.

They want to live the good life, go to Heaven, walk over to the balcony of their Entertainment Hotel suite and look down at those who “sinned”. They want the sinners to have to live in the parking lot in full sun, without tents and without shade, or air conditioning. Sinners should be unable to get a ticket into the park. The self righteous just cannot feel good unless someone else suffers.

For those of you who think it is unfair of God to take in all those who did not live “a good life”. Don’t you think you are being just a wee tad egotistical?

You are deciding the value of God's precious possessions for God, and telling God what He should and should not decide for His tools? Aren’t you being more than just a little self-righteous? Aren’t you trying to tell God what is right? Talk about hubris.

Try that with a man with a good workshop. You might learn some new, interesting vocabulary words.

Perhaps you like the idea of sinning for all of a lifetime: killing, raping, stealing until about three minutes before you die. Then to suddenly “get” religion, confess, be baptized and all sins are forgiven as O.K.? Possibly with a provision that eventually you can get to Heaven after a Big Time Out, in the corner called Purgatory. Is this a better way to organize things?

How about growing up? This is asking to be treated as a child.

His pithy comments and suggestions for a return to a God-centered personal religion will interest everyone.
