Creationism is the idea that suddenly God decided to Create Everything, and accomplished the job in one week. Some go farther and say that it was all done about 6,000 years ago. I call this “Beam Me Down” Creationism. There exists no evidence to indicate that God has ever done this. The question is, why should He? Why would God be in a hurry? Does God have a deadline? Holistic instantaneous creationism is an idea created by the active human brain. A brain stressed by having to grasp at straws while possessing a vivid imagination. What might be gained by such a story? Perhaps only a short period of entertainment around the neolithic campfire. Good story tellers gained in personal prestige. The inventor of the story had something to gain. Counter that with the the scientific method. It does not rely on trust. It trusts and verifies, and re-verifies over and over again. All results remain forever subject to revision with newer, better verifiable conditions and results. Every scientist in the field is anxious and eager to succeed at improving the theory. A cat thrown into a dog pound is a good way to describe every such effort. The cat had either be able to defend himself, or have convincing evidence that he is a dog in disguise. The new idea has to survive in a nasty, no-holds-bared environment. Those scientists can fight dirty. Their control (the prizefight referee) is peer review; that old verify, and re-verify over and over again. Peer review is a world wide open season on every publication of findings and theory. Peer review is a microscope that examines everything. Peers look for sloppy technique. Peers look for poor interpretation of data. Peers check for faulty data and experimental results. Peers get almost as much good cheer from finding another scientist in error as in getting a Nobel Prize. Experimental data must be independently reproducible. Scientists are not above faking it. The recent case of cloning in South Korea comes to mind as an example of faking data. A few years ago there was the faulty data in the “breakthrough” cold fusion process. All the evidence so far revealed indicates that God does not work by way of holistic instantaneous creationism. Everything we can see in the scientific record is contrary to this idea. Nothing suggests that God is actively working toward stupidity. Everything suggests that God is actively working toward smartness and intelligence. Stupidity is a non-survival trait. That is what evolution is all about. That is God’s Plan. Forced change. Change forced by the competition to survive. Enter Charles Darwin, in 1859. He proposed a theory. He put up a target and said to scientists (not ignorant journalists, nor rabidly foaming radical religionists), “Punch a hole in it. Prove me wrong.” The key word is PROVE. It has not yet been done. The theory has survived for 147 years basically unchanged despite the Scopes Trial, and the release of a lot of hot air from pulpits. That, my friends, is a tough scientific theory. Why do most religious leaders refuse to even think about updating their beliefs about God and creationism 147 years later? They are afraid. They are afraid that they are wrong. Afraid that their parents and leaders and teachers were wrong. They are afraid that the goodie train will stop rolling. That would be a really unwelcome change. They don’t want to change. The answer is simple greed. The answer is found in the children’s story about an Emperor and his new set of clothes. Religious leaders can’t stand the microscope examination process of reason. They don’t like to be questioned. They can rarely prove anything. In the scientist’s world, that is simply another word for charlatanism. The religious leaders then revert to the age old, and very human tactics of deny, deny, deny. This followed ny accusation, accusation, and accusation. The next step is more serious and is attack, attack, and attack. Attack the evidence in any way possible. Attack the person advancing the argument. Destroy them in any way. If the cat and dog fights between scientists is dirty, the religious leaders get real serious. They go for the throat. If the opposition endangering the goodie flow is dead. If the opposition has had their voice unheard, or stifled. If the opposition is unable to spread the “word”, then the goodie flow is safe. If the opposition can be intimidated by threats to their career, person, or family, the goodie flow is safe. It has been done before and it will be done again. That was what the Scopes trial was all about. All of this is , of course, always followed by trying to confuse the issue. Trot out some half baked “professor” that can be bought, someone with a “Ph.D.” attached to their name, and no ethics. A “name” that can be “paid off” in some fashion. Use this person, or group of persons, to attempt to substitute an irrational, unsupported (but it sounds good) “theory” for the real deal. This tactic works with the ignorant, uneducated unthinking and unsophisticated masses. They don’t know or understand, but it sounds so real and rational. P.S.: A Ph.D. can be bought for as little as $35. That kind is worth every penny of its cost. The next step is to attempt to keep ‘em ignorant and stupid. Make the substitute irrational and unsupported (but it sounds good) “theory” a part of the required course of study in the schools. Poison the children’s minds early. Bend their minds early. Teach them not to question. Protect your position at all costs. Protect your goodie flow. Every argument advanced against Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution in the last 147 years that I’ve read, heard about, or studied is incomplete, inexact, or a deliberate misstatement of facts: a lie. Why bother to do this? God is not going to be a better God because of such lies. God is not going to Be More Perfect if you lie about Him. That very act of telling a lie perverts the True Vision of God. People learn to distrust liars. They begin to sense the lie. A lie is much harder to keep straight than the truth. Every parent knows this and learns how to use this to trip up a lie. Every parent learns how to get to the truth. Lying about God, or Creation perverts the religion that it seeks to support. It exposes the perverts. It shows the rest of us just what you are. A pervert. An Emperor with the most expensive clothes. An Emperor with no clothes. Essentially you are no different from any other criminal extortionist. You just wear prettier camouflage. This helps to hide your predator status from your prey. It does not change what you are: a predator of your own species. A true cannibal.
