What I have been unable to figure out is how so many people in the middle economic class were so easily duped by George Bush and his spin and web weaving master, Karl Rove. Was it ignorance? Stupidity? Distraction? A suicide wish? All of the above? The result is an unprecedented attack on the American Middle Class. Perhaps it is the culmination of a final failure of our educational system? The educational system has been in ill health and declining in ability to perform its mission due to acute fiscal starvation and stupid “tinkering” for thirty years. No surprise there. Or, could it be disgust with a political system that has achieved one of the goals of our Founding Fathers: inability of government to function? Why do only 16% of the electorate bother to cast a ballot? Some “spinners” of psychobabble has convinced the non-voters that politics and government does not make a difference in peoples’ lives. Tell that to the 2,500 service personnel that have spilled their life’s blood into the sands of Iraq. Tell that to the 17,000 injured servicemen and women who will find themselves and their injuries ignored in the future, as “we can’t afford it”. How could a nation built since World War II, on the strength of the middle class devolve in intelligence so far so quickly and to the point that it commits structural suicide? Were the minor sexual peccadilloes of Bill Clinton all that important? We all had good reason to believe before he was first elected that he had a minor problem with controlling his zipper. We wanted a good politician and manager. We got one. Was the issue of White Water all that important when compared to the very real issues of non-existent weapons of mass destruction, non-bid Halliburton contracts, the deaths of tens of thousands of Iraqis, thousands of U.S. troops killed, and ten of thousands injured? Despite all the rumor mongering, character assassination, and terrific expenditure of tax payer’s funds by the Republicans to fine sift the artificially created dust cloud around White Water, the result was a great, big, huge wet-firecracker dud. Ken Star wasn’t one and there was nothing to find. Are we so very concerned that a tiny minority of our population (gays) be denied the joys of a marriage contract? If we were all that worried about the uncontrolled sex involved, a little thought should indicate that marriage can be an effective way to cut down on promiscuity. Marriage is also a way to allow mutual insurance coverage and to cut down on inequities related to illness, death and inheritance. George Bush and the Republicans have not hunted down every gay in the US and locked them up to keep them from having sex. Nor have they even insisted that they use a condom. It can’t be stem cells. I doubt that one person in a hundred on the street could even define the term adequately. Could it be abortion? The Republicans have been in power for five years, with control of both houses of Congress. George Bush and the Republicans have not attacked abortion. They didn’t and don’t care about abortion. They only care about political power and the depth of the public coffers which they can raid for themselves and their friends after waving a few red flags in front of dumb animals. Maybe we deserve to feel the sword. So what have George Bush and the Republicans accomplished in their tenure and with their power so far? 1. They have attacked Social Security. No surprise there. The Republicans have been frothing at the mouth over Social Security ever since it was started. They don’t want people to feel any economic security, not even in old age. Insecure people can more easily be controlled and manipulated. Old, weak, sick, desperately poor people who don’t vote would be so much easier to kick around than old, healthy, confident, secure senior citizens that do vote. 2. They have attacked our courts, our laws, our freedoms, our privacy, and our very Constitution. Their latest fiasco being the assault on the separation of powers built into the Constitution. Before that it was privacy of our citizens. Even the moderate Republicans are starting to figure out that this President and his warped way of thinking is a time bomb disaster in waiting for the Republican Party. 3. They have attacked our schools at all levels, trying their very best to finally destroy that vast generator of the American Middle Class: public education. After WWII, the best lesson in economics ever created, the GI Bill, proved beyond any doubt that investment in education has only one result: growth of the economy. It was a lesson the Republicans failed to learn. Actually they couldn’t stand the competition. 4. The Republican Party has continued to ignore the metastasizing health care crisis in the U.S.: adding some six million of our citizens to the rolls of the uninsured in five years. They will not be happy until the only people in America with health insurance are the very rich. The ones who need it the least. Check the similar relationship to #1 in this list. 5. George Bush and the Republicans have only promoted ways for big oil and big pharmaceutical companies to continue to make more money at the expense of the everyone, and especially the sick and dying. Witness the abysmal flop of their drug plan. This plan, obviously created by the pharmaceutical industry, in the same way that the national energy plan was also created by the petroleum industry, is a guaranteed cash cow for the big drug companies. How are you enjoying your gasoline at $3.50 per gallon? Want to wager about the cost of prescription drugs in five years? Stock up on aspirin now. 6. They have continued to promote the wholesale exportation of family supporting wage level jobs overseas. They actually give tax breaks to the businesses that leave. They don’t want the common American people to feel any economic security. Unemployed, insecure people working for desperation wages can more easily be controlled and manipulated. Unemployed poor sick people who don’t vote are so much easier to kick around than healthy, confident, secure citizens. 7. They have shrunk the ability of individuals and families to escape the coils of debt caused by poor management, but much more commonly due to catastrophic illnesses (no health insurance), while carefully preserving that ability for fat cat corporate management. Another way of reducing the ability of individuals to redeem themselves and get a new start on life. Look again at the relationship to #1, #4, #5, and #6. If you feel that you are slowly sliding into an inescapable pit, you may be right, and it may not be an accident, or even your fault. 8. They “threw open” our borders, despite the clear warnings of 911, and the results of the 1986 amnesty legislation, to uncontrolled illegal mass migration of tens of millions of largely uneducated, unskilled “raw” physical grunt laborers. They did this to provide a huge pool of cheap, easily controlled, and easily abused labor for tens of thousands of businesses and to add an additional pressure wave to further erode and hopefully destroy American labor unions. That this huge flood of illegal immigrants has swamped the schools, hospitals, and law enforcement infrastructure of the country is of no concern to folks who send their kids to private schools, go to private physicians and hospitals, live in protected and gated communities and can afford the best attorneys that money can buy. You notice that there are no significant efforts to increase penalties or enforcement enhancement to deal with the source problem of such criminal employers. This is the Republican Party plan to reward criminal behavior. Best of all, they didn’t have to “do” anything. Ignoring the problem let it work most effectively for their purposes. 9. George Bush preemptively attacked two foreign countries without a declaration of war on the premise that we had been attacked (911). Most of the attackers of 911 came from Saudi Arabia. We did not attack Saudi Arabia. We have not destroyed the Taliban. The Republican controlled government of George Bush created the biggest lie in the history of international relations (WMD) since the First Crusade. Iraq was not involved with 911. George Bush has continued to lie about and distort every facet of the war in Iraq for three years while his mismanagement has allowed the casualty count to grow. In the meantime, Osama escaped, rebuilt, and is now going on the attack again. The Bush Gang cannot chew gum and walk at the same time. They could not shoot and hit a barn from the inside with the door closed. Well, Dick Cheney might, if he had a shotgun. No wonder respect for America has sunk to new lows across the globe. 10. In the process of “combating terrorism”, fear mongering, and eroding the Bill of Rights, combined with irresponsible fiscal policies, the Republican Party is well along in bankrupting the country, and moving the federal government from a surplus to the largest debt in US history. They have been unceasing in their utter incompetence, extraordinarily corrupt, and abusive of their political power. Their premise seems to be that rich people have no responsibility to preserve, protect, and support our government that creates the atmosphere and environment of freedom that allows them to become rich in the first instance. I think they all plan to run off to Switzerland to enjoy the fruits of their secret accounts and let the U.S. sink into a quagmire behind them. Of all of these problems, the most damaging of these incompetencies is the deliberate abrogation of governmental responsibility to secure our borders. Every other country in the world is always at great pains to secure their national borders. Are the Republicans so brain dead or incapable of thinking about anything other than stuffing their personal wallets? The problem of our border with Mexico is not new. It has been a problem for forty years. The difference is the rate of influx under George Bush: three million illegals a year for each of five long Republican controlled government years is 15 million. It is that large lump that is impossible to swallow or assimilate. We already know how to effectively deal with illegal mass migration. We dealt with it all across the world during and after WWII. We can seal our borders to illegal entry. All it takes is the will to do so. All else is lies and proof of incompetence. We can again throw up immense temporary “Relocation Camps” like we did for the Japanese in the US. We can keep the illegal immigrants there as long as necessary, separated by sex, so they won’t throw off “anchor babies” and go through the process of confinement, investigation, and eventual deportation. We need to do the investigation, so we can go after, arrest, fine and then imprison the criminals that have been employing the illegals and profiting from their indentured slave status for so long.
