I Am Who I Am

By: George Wallace

God is.

God exists.

This statement of faith, by itself, is the ultimate assumption.

It is the wellspring. All else springs from it, grows from it, flows from it.

It is the most dangerous assumption.

First, this assumption may simply be an egomaniacal self conceit. This assumption may be centered around the idea that “I”, a human being, am so “special”. It is not possible for me to exist without there being an all-powerful God that “made me”.

Second, this is an unsupported and unstable ego platform. It is only a small journey to an egomaniacal anthropomorphous God. That kind of God is more palatable or acceptable to the vast majority of humans.

This is the self conceited idea that God must look like us. God created us to look like Him.

That is a perfect ego warmer. Hug that teapot cozy!

It just has to be a human created idea of God. Nowhere in my readings have I found God describing Himself to humans as human like, or telling us what He looks like. “I am who I am,” (Exodus 3:14) is just plain mysterious. It contains no details. God must like to be mysterious. Or, is that we demand that our Gods be mysterious to be taken seriously.

A “voice of thunder”, a voice from a burning bush, and invisible, speaking from clear air (Mark 1:11) are examples. One prophet had a truly spectacular vision that some have likened to a spaceship.

Interestingly enough, human beings are the only species we have so far found that “worships” a supreme being. “God” it seems, is the only thing that most of us have as human beings to hang on to in life that helps us define our lives. Which is curious as we all seem to have trouble in figuring out the nature of God and our personal relationship to Him.

At this point, I want to emphasize something. You must make your own decisions about your belief and faith. You must make your own decisions about the existence of God and your relationship to Him. Then be comfortable with your decision.

I encourage you to study other religions, as this will enrich your own perceptions.

A caution, as soon as someone tries to tell you by word of mouth, or by way of the written word, that they, their religion, has the answers, be prepared to walk away. Sometimes the "sales pitch" is rough, crude and direct. Sometimes the "sales pitch" is subtle, complex, and takes hours of study to see through their camouflage.

You can always tell that they are hunting you, when they tell you that they have all the answers, and that they are "right" and all others are "wrong".

Try to answer for yourself as you would to a small child’s questions, “What is God? Where is God? What does God do? How do I know God answers my prayers?”

His pithy comments and suggestions for a return to a God-centered personal religion will interest everyone.
