God does not seem to be listening. This does not mean you cannot pray. It does not mean that there is no place for prayer in your life. It does not mean that you cannot have a vision quest. I suggest simply that you attempt all of them in the comfort of your home. In your living room, or bedroom, or back yard. You don’t even have to turn off the TV. Focus yourself on God. Close your eyes if it helps. Pray aloud if it helps you to think clearly, to focus. Concentrate on your purpose for your quest. Control your breathing and relax. God is not going to jump out of the shrubs, or the corner of the room, and bite you. Most vision-questers are seeking “a direction” from God. Some are seeking a name. Some seek something more. It depends on upon one’s perspective. It might be the culmination of a rite of passage. A signal of the passage from childhood to an adult status. They might just want to get a “vision”. Some seek a verbal message from God. Either can be related to “religious leaders” for interpretation. A “name” can be given, or a “totem” assigned. This then can become a guiding force of focus for that individual’s adult life. One of your first clues that you are close is that you will no longer be able to hear the TV. You have begun to approach The Way, Oneness with God, Enlightenment, Bliss, or Nirvana. A vision quest is not the same as going to sleep. You stay awake. The vision may have some resemblance to a dream. It may have some of the same qualities as a dream. You will know the difference. You will not be asleep.
(c) Copyright 2006: George Wallace recently published a book on religion which lashes out at nearly all of the comfortable ideas about God, the trappings of organized religion, and the priesthood. His pithy comments and suggestions for a return to a God-centered personal religion will interest everyone.
