When does God attach a soul? First, please remember that we’re trying to use straight line steps of thought. Second, that I stated previously that the whole question of “soul” was an unknown. I agree that the whole question as to whether we even have a soul is an assumption. I believe that we do “get a soul” at some point. I just don’t know at what age. I don't think God initiates a soul at conception because of the high risk of spontaneous abortion early or late. I think that God has a process for placing a piece of “soul” when a new born takes its first breath of air. Maybe the soul is already in the air like a virus. I just don’t know. Maybe it is disguised as a rhino virus, the common cold virus. Honesty requires me to include information about different groups choosing later times for insemination with the soul. One, at the age of initial awareness, around age six, and another at the age of maturity and self responsibility, at about age twenty-five, according to brain growth research. I think any of the three choices are valid and reasonable. I think they all “work” logically. Also please remember, I’ve been writing about the average person. People are a diverse group and they cover the bell curve. There are always exceptions at both extremes of the curve. If a person only gets a soul at either age six or at age twenty-five, isn’t that a lot of waste? This question is like one of those drawings that you can “see” two ways. A human figure on one side and an animal on the other. It depends on how you “look” at it. Obviously seeing and looking are different. The three possibilities for insemination of the soul I have suggested may not be all that are possible. However, for purposes of discussion, let's now work on the age twenty-five choice. The attrition rate for humans reaching the age of twenty-five is enormous. I don’t know the exact numbers, but they are high. Here’s a short list of factors cutting down on the numbers of humans attaining this age: pathogens, auto accidents, and animal encounters of all kinds. This list makes an argument against teen drinking, driving a car, and marriage before age twenty-five valid. Think about it. I’m sure you could easily add more to the list above. A significant number of individuals will not make it to age twenty-five for a wide variety of reasons. They’re here, but by this reasoning they will never have souls. God does not waste. My personal choice for soul insertion is at first breath, but I’m willing to concede that I might be wrong. When we talk about the character development we see in the late teen years, isn’t it just as possible that while we cannot recognize it for what it is, what is happening is the awakening, or development of soul? Again, try to think like a non-mammalian God. He is not bound by “humanitarian” concerns. He doesn’t have any. It is up to us humans to love and cherish our children, to teach them and encourage learning. God’s only concerns may be the good of the species, and the result He gets from His tools. The wounded and the weak must be allowed to perish for the good of the species, and an untempered tool cannot do the required work. Evolution at work. Logic says that it is simply easier to "grow souls" in a fashion similar to gardening. Such that the fruit has to reach a certain point of development after it has formed and before it has any real value. There are many circumstances which can affect the fruit before it is fully ripe and harvest can begin. Citrus and grapes are like this. The fruit is on the limb, or vine, and has not had enough time in the sun. Human souls may be like fruit of the vine. (John 15:1-13). A related item: as humans, we are attracted to war despite strict strictures against it. Could this attraction be a part of the “weeding process”? We humans are jingoistic, and excited by the prospect of war. Every generation finds a way to send off their young and able, to be tested on the fields of battle. The young and able are sorted out by death and the vagaries of conflict. What else can it be but a mechanism of genetic selection? History will be written by the winners.
