You must seek oneness with God, enlightenment, or nirvana within yourself. This is your “vision quest.” God is the source of everything and everything is connected. God is in everyone. You can learn not to hear sounds around you. You can learn not to see sights around you, or smell, or taste. You can learn to shut out the rest of the world. You can see God. Perhaps you can even converse with God. How do we know that you can do this? To be perfectly frank, there is some doubt. Some people seem to do this easily. Others seem to have a hard time. The truth of it is, that you will never know until you try for yourself. It may, after all, be an illusion, or a delusion. Or, it may be that some people naturally find it an easy process, and for others it is very difficult. Humans always spread themselves out in a bell curve, no matter what the subject, or question. Think of all of the famous people in history who have proclaimed their ability to “speak with", or "hear God”. Maybe, like the character in the popular story that confronted a ghost, they were suffering from a bit of tainted cheese. Jesus, Mohammed, Buddha, and Joan of Arc are a few who were supposed to speak to, or to hear God. You can probably name a few more recent examples of your own. Jim Jones of Belize infamy and David Koresh, of Waco, Texas and self immolation fame come to my mind. I make no such claim. If God has been talking to me, He has been singularly quiet about it. Remember, too, that “society” does not take very good care of those who “speak with", or "hear God.” Be careful about if, where, when, or how you proclaim your new personal relationship with God. Being crucified, beheaded, or burned at the stake are particularly nasty ways to die. You might find yourself locked up in an institution, or forcibly medicated. You might find yourself wandering the streets pushing a shopping cart. Unless, of course, you wish to found a religion named after yourself. Have churches, monasteries, schools, and palaces named after you? How about a University? Or, possibly you could be the foundation of a new variety of curses. Just a reminder: Sure the Roman dupes did the deed, but Jesus was crucified at the behest of the leaders of organized religion. Jesus was crucified at the behest of leaders who lied, saying that He was causing “unrest”. Or, He might possibly cause “unrest”. Gee Whiz, you mean someone might wave a fist in the air and yell, “Piss on Pontius Pilate!” to the holiday crowd? Possibly someone will demand lower cost animal sacrifices at the Temple? Of one thing you can be sure. To the degree that you threaten the position of religious leaders. To the degree that you threaten the power of religious leaders. To the degree that you threaten the income of established institutionalized religion. Do these things, and you will be vilified. Do this, and you will be castigated. Do this, and you will be called names. Do this, and you will be denounced. Do this, and you will be preached against. Do this, and you will be threatened. Do this, and you will be hounded. Do this, and you will be fined. Do this, and you will be punished. Do this, and you will be wounded. Do this, and you will be imprisoned. Do this, and you will be tortured. Do this, and you will be quite possibly executed. The name of this game is called persecution. It has one rule. You lose. This is called punishing anyone “different”. This is the way religious leaders punish anyone who thinks for himself. This is the way religious leaders punish anyone who doesn't want to play in a game where there is only one rule, "You lose."
(c) Copyright 2006: George Wallace recently published a book on religion which lashes out at nearly all of the comfortable ideas about God, the trappings of organized religion, and the priesthood. His pithy comments and suggestions for a return to a God-centered personal religion will interest everyone.
