If the individual is free and has free will, he cannot be controlled. He cannot be given limits. The concepts are contradictory and opposites. God therefore cannot dictate the actions of humans. As this would by definition deprive them of free will. It would deprive them of the power to choose. So God does not give us rules to follow. God does not cheat. God does not give with one hand and take away with the other. To do so would limit the ability of His human tools to complete His Purpose. Commandments from God are opposite to His purpose. His purpose can not be served by telling us what to do. His purpose can not be served by telling us how to behave. His purpose can not be served by telling us even how to worship Him. A commandment sounds like a rule that had better not be broken, or even bent. Or else. But God doesn’t use “or else situations,” if you have free will. A set of commandments is antithetical to God’s purpose. A set of ten commandments is a human concept. It is a human concept based on fear. It is a human concept based on an Egyptian religious belief in the secrets and powers of numerology. I believe I understand where the problem began. It is Moses’ fault. He was an educated Egyptian before he became the leader of the Israelites. Of course, you do have to give the poor guy some slack, he was only human. Any human coming into close contact with God needs some slack. His knees had to be shaking. He most likely badly needed to go behind a bush. His bowels may have been turning into water. Confronting the presence of God is not an every day experience. There’s Moses, on hands and knees, and with his nose buried in the sand. If you believe God spoke, Moses had no choice. He had to take the suggestions as commandments. That is just being human. That does not make it so. God does not cheat.
(c) Copyright 2006: George Wallace recently published a book on religion which lashes out at nearly all of the comfortable ideas about God, the trappings of organized religion, and the priesthood. His pithy comments and suggestions for a return to a God-centered personal religion will interest everyone.
