Che, Osama, and You

Che, Osama, and You

The latest hoorah about the US Government tracking large financial transactions is much ado about nothing.

First, the government has been doing this for many years. It is one of the methods used to track money laundering activities of organized crime. It really has not had much effect as the intelligent criminals simply found another way to transfer funds out of sight of law enforcement. It is highly unlikely that this new instance of government intrusion into everyday aspects of our lives will have any effect on the ability of our interior home-grown terrorists to transfer funds to or from the international terrorists planning to do the United States harm.

Second, the absurd idea promoted by some of the right-wing tub thumpers that somehow the fight against terrorism is or has been impaired because of this revelation only gives us some realistic idea of just how many cards these ideologues have missing from their personal decks of cards.

Now it may be that terrorists are mentally impaired more than I think, and in my opinion these are really mentally twisted characters, but I am not willing to go so far as to think them totally stupid. We will only catch the stupid ones. That is real life. The stupid fall. The bright live and breed.

Given the level of vitriol I saw today with one half-wit American wight suggesting an immediate firing squad for the writers, editors and publishers of the New York Times, LA Times and Wall Street Journal, I am left with the feeling that somebody’s parents should not have been issued a breeding permit. It is and has been common knowledge for sometime that the government tracks large international fund transfers. Terrorists are bright enough to avoid the unwanted attention. To assume otherwise is specious at best, and illustrates a vastly deficient understanding of our opponent in the world of war of ideas, religion and culture.

Third, the facts appear to be that terrorists enter our country as students or tourists and bring bundles of cash with them. It also appears to be true that a part of terrorist training seems to be methods of gaining, or developing, or stealing any necessary funds through local criminal activities ranging from bank robbery to credit card fraud.

The facts are that huge amounts of money are not required to do a great deal of damage, and kill large numbers of people. The inexpensive materials needed to make powerful explosives or poison gasses can be stolen, or simply purchased at many legal and widely available retail outlets. The real costs for a terrorist cell are simply basic living expenses: rent, food, transportation, and communications. The same kind of expenses that you must deal with daily, weekly, and monthly. Only nuclear materials have controls tight enough to make them generally unavailable to terrorists. At least I hope that this has continued to be true.

Fourth, the true issue involved in this newest artificial ruckus falls into a narrow crevice which is centered in the right of the public to know what their government is doing in the name of that public, and the right of a free press to print news stories about the governments activities. That is exactly why the newspapers were asked by our government not to publish. The very act of the government asking tells us all we need to know. It was perfectly legal for the newspapers to publish this material. It was the choice of the newspapers to publish or not. Of course, this freedom does not apply to the leaker, if in fact it really was leaked, and not deliberately pumped out by the White House office in charge of watery dribbles.

What is really terrorizing is that anyone born and raised in a free society would actually go on national television to suggest an immediate firing squad for the editors and publishers of the newspapers. Of course, it was Fox News. FBI and HS attention! This character bears watching!

All the discussion of this subject is just another RED HERRING designed to take attention away from the basic factual failure of the Bush Administration to keep its eye on the ball, eye on the prize, eye on the true goal; that it has diverted attention, efforts, manpower, and resources away from the task of finding and eliminating al-Qaeda and Osama ben-Laden.

If we had done the job properly, al-Qaeda would not have had time to metastasize throughout the world, nor would there have been time for Osama to gain “cult” status among the mentally deficient or downtrodden. We should have long ago completely surrounded the area of the mountains where we suspect Osama has dug his rat hole. We could have fenced him in. We could have made it Osama escape proof. Once surrounded, we could have begun the process of starving and digging out the verminous rats. We should be in charge of the surface of the mountain ranges in which he has dug in. If necessary we could drill down and inject poison gas into the rat holes and warrens, just as you would do with any colony of disease bearing rodents.

Yes, there will be idiot copy cat terrorists for decades after the al-Qaeda movement is quietly buried without a headstone. Yes, there are probably hundreds of hidden cells around the world which we will have to find, and root out. The cancer cells have to be excised. The experience will very clearly parallel that which the world experienced with “Che” Guivera. Once he was thoroughly dead, it still took time for the movement to wither and die. The mascot was unromantically killed and was only stinking dead meat. A path that clearly ends in that kind of death is not an appealing road to follow. Che got no show trial where he could build himself into a martyr. That is another lesson we must remember with Osama. He must not be allowed to surrender.

There have been and still are many similar groups from the Symbionese Liberation Army gang of bank robbing murderers to Tim McVey and family. There are also loners: this may be the case with Sirhan Sirhan.

We need to turn the full resources of government loose on all organized crime from the Italian Mafia to the drug gangs that distribute their high profit poison from LA to Boston, from Brownsville to Seattle, and from San Francisco to Chicago to NYNY. This has got to be a reliable source of funding freely available to terrorists. That make it important. That means that we need to do something about it. That and getting Osama, dead.
