Burn This Book: The Church, Women, and Celibacy

By: George Wallace

I suspect that when scripture, especially Christ's words, are unclear to us, we are looking at a major translation problem. How does it make you feel to hear that serious scholars contend that in the translation from Aramaic to Hebrew to Greek to Latin to English, that the name Joshua got changed to Jesus? If you don’t want to be disturbed. Stop reading this material now. Burn This Book

If you do not have it within you to question yourself. If all you want is comfort. If all you want is to be left alone in your unconsidered beliefs. If for you, the Bible is the actual words of God, and must be taken literally. If you don’t understand the word version, at the top, where it says, The King James version of the Bible, then stop.

If you can’t understand that the scholars that wrote this English Version of the Good Book were getting well paid by King James. If you can’t understand that the scholars were paid over a very long time. If you can’t understand that the scholars liked having a steady paycheck, then stop.

The first version was published in 1611. There were seven different versions. The last was printed over a hundred years later. The translators had such a good thing going that they didn’t want to stop with one version, or one king.

Do you understand that they liked getting that paycheck and didn’t want to anger the king? That it is highly probable that they slanted their language translations. That it is highly probable that they made many errors in their work. That it is highly probable that they made errors simply because they were human beings. That it is highly probable that they had arguments between themselves, and ended up settling on compromises. Compromises that would keep the king happy. For a comparison, the compromise design team seeking a horse ended with what looks like a camel.

If even that central name couldn’t be done correctly, what else was done incorrectly with God’s real message?

If you don’t want to be disturbed. Stop reading this material now. Burn it. Burn this book.

My plan is to disturb you, deeply and profoundly. I want to make you think for yourself. You just might find this to be painful.

Examples might be questions like: Just who, when, and where was it decided that Christians would deliberately subjugate, dominate, and degrade women? (Eph. 5:22-24) Just who was it that decided to twist the facts about the women named Mary in the life of Jesus? Why do this? Obviously, it wasn't very religious, or moral behavior. Why do some church leaders continue to do this to this day?

Why isn't celibacy seen for what it really is, a hatred of women. Celibacy is an attempt to distance themselves as far as possible from women. Sex is God's gift to the human race, and these "leaders" distrust themselves so much, that they cannot and will not deal with it? Aren't they disqualifying themselves for any leadership role in religion by their very abstinence?

Celibacy isn't leadership, it is cowardice.

Celibacy is the root cause of and source for the eleven thousand reported claims of child sexual abuse by priests over the last fifty years. Celibacy is the reason these acts of perversion were hidden by the church leadership.

(c) Copyright 2006: George Wallace recently published a book on religion which lashes out at nearly all of the comfortable ideas about God, the trappings of organized religion, and the priesthood. His pithy comments and suggestions for a return to a God-centered personal religion will interest everyone.
