The Pennsylvania incident where five very young Amish school girls were murdered in their school room by a deranged gunman has again pulled out the very worst of propaganda to service a helpless point of view. “There’s nothing that we could have done to prevent this kind of incident from happening.” What utter bull manure! Yes, there are many things that could be done to prevent school shooting incidents of this type from happening. Some are simple. Many are not simple, but doable. Start with effective gun control, with real teeth. Change the situation to where those who want to carry guns would be thoroughly trained, undergo psychological evaluation and be subject to background checks. Charles Roberts was a hidden psychological monster that should never have been allowed to have access to any gun. Psychological evaluation and a background check could have kept him from getting the guns that fired his sick imagination to the point of seeking an easy target of opportunity. Before I continue with targets: next, don’t create within ourselves a fatalistic belief “that nothing can be done”. Of course, something can be done. Many things can be done. First step is to have the will to see to it that insane monsters do not have the opportunity to turn innocent little school girls into shooting gallery targets at their own chalkboard. Have some Rage about that! Get some guts and determination! Don’t talk about, and publicize, “forgiveness” for such outrageous behavior, instead talk about doing something effective for a change to prevent such horror stories from happening. It is possible to identify the psychos, the sociopaths and those with anger management issues, those that fly into road rage at tiny incidents, and those with a propensity for physical violence. It is possible to deny these small groups a permit to purchase, own, or possess a firearm. If you are unwilling to deal with this, then your choice is to continue to bury murdered little girls and wring your hands. You would rather deal with violent deaths of innocents. Targets and targeting. Our public schools are a highly visible arm of government. They are the first place where we learn to deal with authority. Our schools are wide open. They are unprotected. They are seen as not dangerous to those who display anger. Schools have become disrespected and as they have done so, they have also become an easy target of rage. Schools are a natural and easy target for anyone who has developed a grudge about anything and any part of society that offers to control them. Schools are the arm of society and government that is easy to attack. Schools are also the arm of society where first rules controlling behavior are imposed. This memory lingers and makes schools a target of first choice. If this were not true, you would see more angry gunmen attacking city halls, council chambers, planning, permit, and water departments. Court houses have come under fire in recent years. Security has been beefed up there. Schools obviously need additional security as well. Police stations, with their armed personnel, are not very commonly targets of gunmen. Why? The gunmen are cowards. The gunmen know that a place where people are armed and likely to fight back are not easy targets. The gunmen know that they are unlikely to be able to accomplish their goals at such places. That fact, and the use of the counterpoint of an attack on a police station highlighted one Rambo movie and one Terminator movie in recent years. That is why at least one thoughtful legislator has proposed arming the staffs at schools. Apparently Israel was forced to do this some years ago to protect their children and as a consequence has not had many armed attacks on schools and children at school since. This is exactly the same issue that caused the placement of armed marshals on commercial airplanes. Arming pilots would have ignored the fact that pilots have a slight responsibility to keep the planes flying. Pilots at least have mechanical autopilots and co-pilots to back them up. Two things I can guarantee, there would be a definite change in attitudes, deportment, speech patterns, and behavior at schools if all the staff were packing heat. There would be fewer gun attacks at schools.
