I begin first with the strong belief that the vast majority of priests and ministers are unnecessary. They are redundant. They are about as useful as skin warts. It simply is not important whether or not clerics are men. It simply is not important whether or not clerics are women. It simply is not important whether or not clerics are heterosexual. It simply is not important whether or not clerics are or homosexual. It simply is not important whether or not clerics are black. It simply is not important whether or not clerics are purple. It simply is not important whether or not clerics are green. The only a few really important requirements for any cleric. They are for that person to be self supporting. Meaning not dependent on "donations", "contributions", and "fees" for his, or her, livelihood. Any cleric should be in a marriage. A cleric should be in a civil contract. A cleric should be in a long term relationship with another adult. Anyone aspiring to the status of cleric should profess a belief in God. A priest, minister, or cleric must regularly experience the transcendence, the ecstatic state, the strong spiritual part of the sexual embrace. It is that experience that transports us outside of ourselves. A priest, minister, or cleric who does not regularly experience sex cannot fully appreciate the human condition. A priest, minister, or cleric who does not regularly experience sex cannot fully understand being human. Nor can a priest, minister, or cleric who does not regularly experience sex adequately counsel troubled people. A celibate priest is like a blind, deaf, and numb medical doctor. A celibate priest is a person in a state of arrest from normal development. A celibate priest is a bomb waiting to explode into a pedophile waiting for the nest target of opportunity. A celibate priest is highly likely to violate his vows and leave the priesthood.
(c) Copyright 2006: George Wallace recently published a book on religion which lashes out at nearly all of the comfortable ideas about God, the trappings of organized religion, and the priesthood. His pithy comments and suggestions for a return to a God-centered personal religion will interest everyone.
