“Stay The Course” Really Means Using Our Troops As Live Bait

By: George Wallace

“W’s” apologists just don’t get it. “W” has been in office for six long years. He is the one responsible for what happens, or does not happen during his watch. The constant blame game and trying to lay off “W’s” failures on former President Bill Clinton are readily seen for the Loser’s Limp it has always been.

The level of arrogance with which the “W” team arrived in the White House was, and is, the problem. This same arrogance was applied to international relations and it got us into this grandiose mess in the Middle East. The facts are that the head, heart, and soul of al Quida still resides in the mountains of Afghanistan. When full scale military actions declined and ceased in that area (and nearby Pakistan), the focus of the War on Terrorism had been diverted from its true objective.

The Taliban has been given a free ride and plenty of time to re-build and re-arm. They have now returned to the offensive against us. That is directly the fault of Geo. W Bush and his collection of White House Keystone Kids.

Part was the loss of war focus. Part was the loss of offensive effort against the terrorists. Both were part of “W’s” irrational decision based on poor information, poor planning, and childish wishful thinking leading to the attack on Iraq. The real reason for this irrationality will probably never be known. The international repercussions will definitely affect the future relations of our country with the rest of the world for many decades to come.

In many places around the world, in secret rooms, the U.S. must be considered a rogue state. Or, something like an old bull elephant in heat. Not really a predator, but easily irritated and dangerous.

After all the clutter is cleared away, the biggest problem, the largest of those repercussions is the opening of the pathway for the Surge of Persia. Even there, the U.S. has a long history to answer for. Inevitably, Iran will have to be dealt with militarily. The question is, sooner, or later?

In the meantime, “W’s” Johnny-come-lately strategic awareness of reality in Iraq comes down to using U.S. troops as live bait to attract locally grown, trained fascist, terrorist predators. This only makes sense if we also have a well conceived, well planned, and well prepared trap that both collects and kills the serpents and cats that come to eat the constantly rotating offering of fresh mice. Unfortunately, we apparently have a Pentagon that suddenly cannot plan its way out of a wet paper bag, nor provide the proper material to cut a hole.

If this plan of using our troops as live bait were really working, we would also be given plenty of information in the media about its glowing success. That is not happening. Where are the dead insurgent body counts? All we know about are our body counts. 2,660 and counting more daily. Twenty thousand severe injuries so far.

Give us a measuring device to be able to recognize success. What havoc are we inflicting on the jhadist’s volunteer terrorists? Their volunteers have come running to Iraq from all over the Muslim world for on-the-ground training in effective murder and terrorist tactics in urban areas.

How many have we intercepted at the Iraq border? What effort has been applied to securing Iraq’s borders? Surely practice in those deserts would be good practice for our own borders.

If the interception rate and the kill rate is high enough, perhaps the “Stay-the Course” is the correct slogan and action plan for Iraq.

Given the population of the Moslem world, and the relatively small numbers of reported “foreign insurgents”, I suspect something different is happening. I think that all we are doing is providing a readily accessible, bloody practice field, with a live fire kill zone as a training camp for al Quida. We eliminate the stupid zealots from their ranks and constantly provide a fantastic amount of propaganda to keep the recruits coming. This also leaves the luckier survivors to return to their home countries fired with success and hours of stories about killing American infidels to share about the “glory” of action against U.S. troops.

Perhaps we ought to really reconsider continuing to feed living bait into the terrarium called Iraq? Is our homeland border security so poorly planned, organized, and run that it is cheaper in American lives to keep the killing zone in Iraq? Isn’t this level of cynicism roughly equivalent to that of Caesar sending the gladiators onto the sand of the arena to hone their skills? Shouldn’t we be more clear with our service personnel about their assignments as sacrificial goats?

Isn’t it interesting that a reporter asked an Iraqi citizen about the remarks of President Bush saying that it was “better to fight them (terrorists) over there (in Iraq) than over here (in the U.S.)”. The Iraqi answered, “Before you invaded my country, we didn’t have them here.”
